Antibiotics

Antimicrobial also known as antibiotics or antibacterials are medications used to treat or prevent in some cases of bacterial infection. Antibiotics are normally prescribed to treat relatively mild infections like acne and some potentially life-threatening conditions of pneumonia caused by viruses.

When prescribed by your doctor, antibiotics develops resistance thus helps to prevent conditions caused by viruses. It is important to take the entire course of antibiotics. Most common side-effects of antibiotics or antibacterials are diarrhoea, mild stomach upset, nausea, which are not serious.

Doses of antibiotics:

    oral antibiotics – tablets, pills and capsules or a syrup.

    topical antibiotics – to treat skin infections creams, lotions, sprays or drops

    injections of antibiotics – injection or infusion through a drip into the blood or muscle for serious infections

Types of antibiotics

There are hundreds of antibiotics, but these can be broadly classified into six groups.

    Penicillin – Used for variety of infections, like, chest infections, urinary tract infections and skin infections

    Cephalosporins – used to treat a infections, effective for treating septicaemia and meningitis

    Aminoglycosides – treat very serious infestions like septicaemia and eye infections

    Tetracyclines – can be used for moderate to severe acne and rosacea.

    Macrolides – treating lung and chest infections.

    Fluoroquinolones – broad-spectrum antibiotics that can be used to treat a wide range of infections
